MARRIAGE TRADITION
OF ACEH PEOPLE
Aceh province which is located on the northern
top of Sumatra island was one of the most important sea port
in 14th century. On the time Aceh was known as the sultanate
of Samudra Pasai with flourishing Islamic tradition as the
only counterpart of the Malaka kingdom. The sea traders from
India and Arab were the main players of the trade that connect
India - China - Java regions, it was like a hub. The people
of Aceh is a mix Malay and people of probably arrived from
Asia mainland in the course of history starting already before
Christmas era. Based on their language dialect and places
of living there are 4 dialects namely the Gayo, Aneuk Jamee,
Tamiang and Aceh. People speaking Aceh dialect forms 70% of
the total population of Aceh province.
Although the people of Aceh has been deeply influenced by
Islam, their original tradition is still being preserved and
bearing the specific identity of the area. For example their
marriage tradition. The influence of Islam also strong such
as the marriage is a must and polygamy is allowed. Every man
or woman entering their adolescence must have partner. For
people of Aceh the woman that will be chosen for their son
must have certain criterions. First is that the parent who
choose for their son, the woman family must be seen from their
social status and heredity.
In looking a partner man parent will do the following steps:
- If man family has decided a certain woman for their son,
an elder who has the sill to speak eloquently will be sent to woman family
- If the marriage request is accepted,another envoy will
be sent to the woman parent to deliver a kind of engagement
symbol that the man and the woman has been bound by the marriage engagement.
- On the day of wedding ceremony the amount of marriage
dowry is fixed. The amount is vary according to the social
status of woman family, but normally between 50 to 100 grams of gold
- After some months then a festive wedding ceremony will
again organized. This wedding ceremony often consume big
amount of costs. It is just like other ethnic group of Indonesia
that marriage or wedding ceremony is a chance or time for
family, relatives and friends to come and celebrate the
important events and keep the close relation among them.
After the marriage the couple will stay at the house of the women family, because
the woman family that will give the couple a new house, land
for farming and other needs as a new family. Due to adherence
with Islam, man can merry more then once according to the Qoranic
verses, although it is not fit anymore with this era when the
life is measured by production, not by social affinity.
