BADUNG TRADITIONAL MARKET
The location of Pasar Badung
It is enclosed by Jalan Gajah Mada, the first main road of
Denpasar city, Jalan Sumatra for east border, and Jalan Hasanudin
for the south border, and Jalan Bukit Tunggal for west border.
The market is accessible from west, north, and east sides.
Later development for transportation to this market is that,
bigger car such as bus can not enter the area due to the small
road with high density of traffic which causing traffic jump
every day. For a sightseeing to Pasar Badung it is only able
by mini van with maximum 5 seaters or best by small car. This
is causing the visit to this market by tourist become smaller
in number as the choice can be found at other places. This
market has been formed since the kingdom of Badung start to
arise, probably around the turn of 19th century. The location
of the market is only 1 km west of the previous palace of
Badung, which is now the city square and Bali museum.
Pasar Badung
The main products that are traded in this market are fish,
meat, kitchen tools, farming tools, ritual needs especially
for the Hindu, clothing, vegetables, fruits, life poultry,
recipes, potatoes, fruits and others. The building is 3 floors,
and the upper floors are the place for the products that can
stay long such as ritual needs, mets, basketry, traditional
bags, cutterely, and even jewelry. Traditional market like
Pasar Badung is known for its art of negotiating. One can
down the price for 50% from their offered price, yet one must
be very careful since the quality of the products are in great
variation. To by a knife for example one has to know the quality
of the metal, if not it can only used for a day. The case
also with the clothing such as shirt, it looks good no different
from special shop, but it is often the seems and stitching
is not good, so it can only be used only a day. If you knowing
well of how the quality should be viewed then Pasar Badung
offers the lowest price compared to any shopping centers in
Denpasar city. The most sought products in Pasar Badung are
fish, vegetables, meat, and recipes. That is the reason why
the influx of the people in the market are all women, and
also almost all vendors are women. This is not just in Pasar
Badung, but Bali in general, small trade is the skill of women,
and mastered by women. Fish which is growing need of Balinese
in place of meat can only be found in fresh in Pasar Badung.
There are many fish stall indeed around the places in Denpasar
or outside of Denpasar, but all come from Pasar Badung. Big
fish dealers drop the fish at 4.00 am at Pasar Badung and
until 09.00 pm the fish normally finish sold in retail or
semi-retail. Fish dealers which bases are in Benoa Port and
Jimbaran Village Co-operation Unit also dropped their fish
to Pasar Badung before it come to retail offers. Local product
suppliers such as vegetables, fruits, recipes and others normally
arrive at the market starting 2.00 am, they come mainly from
the northern area of Kabupaten Badung such as the highland
of Pelaga, and the highland of Kabupaten Tabanan such as Baturiti.
