MARRIAGE TRADITION
OF DAYAK PEOPLE
The original population of KJalimantan island
both those now belong to Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei is
known as Dayak people. Their skin color is more brighter then
the average Indonesian with straight hairs. Their original
belief is still Indonesian genuine that is the homage of ancestor
worship and respect of the nature. It seems that their belief
got the influence of Hindu tradition since the beginning of
5th century. With mixed elements their belief is now known
as Hindu Kaharingan.
Based on their living location Dayak people is known as Ngaju,
Ot Danum, M'anyan, Ot Siang, Lawangan, Katingan and others.
The are mostly live in the inner part of the island with main
subsistence as farmer or collecting forest products, and found
along the big rivers such as M'anyan river, Barito river,
Kapuas river, Katingan river, and others. While on the shore
inhabited by people from Madura, Makassar ( Buginese ). As
a destination of transmigration, Balinese are also many living
on the island.
Among the people of Dayak wedding ceremony for their children
is one of the most important moment traditionally for the
family relationship. Especially the girls are closely watched
by family members before she got married, yet not limiting
the relation with boys at only certain freedom. Between a
man and woman who initiate a relation can get along as far
as parent or any one of the elders giving direct watch. In
case unmarried man and woman are found together in an aloot
place then they will be fined based on customary law. It is
also involving married woman, as a woman can talk with man
who is not her husband as long as third person is presence.
The most ideal couple for Dayak people is marriage between
grand children whose grand fathers are brothers. Forbidden
to marry between children of father's brothers and different
generation for example between parent's brothers and children.
Their sins is considered so heavy and must get difficult punishment
t the front of the people. To avoid this type of relation
their ancestors developed a belief that such a behavior would
harm both those who do this, but also the whole village members.
A youth of 20 years and girls 18 years are considered able
to enter a marriage life, and the parents in the past had
full authority to look for their children partner. youth's
parents would choose the girl in their village and visit her
family to express their intention to request their daughter
to be married with their son. During this visit youth's parent
give a kind of application money to girl's parents. Receiving
this request girl's parents will call their family and relative
to organize a research on this youth, if he is a good man
not descendant of of slave or ghost. In Dayak society in the
past slavery was exist, although has been abolished after
the independence, but until today slave descendant is considered
low status. While some people is considered by genetic could
transformed themselves into ghosts. if request then is accepted
a wedding ceremony will be organized and the cost will be
born by girl's family with the aid of youth's family. Before
wedding ceremony is actually conducted, will be discussed
gifts and marriage dowry that would be able by youth's family.
Cost of wedding ceremony will be also born by youth's family
which is to be agreed during the discussion. For wedding feast,
pigs will be slaughtered, and chicken is considered less valuable.
Still a problem for the man and his family is marriage dowry
which is often to expensive, but this wealth will be given
back to the couple if found that the man is useful to their
daughter, become a good husband. During wedding ceremony the
situation is not less festive then other ethnic groups of
Indonesia, that indicate this moment is too important for
the society, and continuation of its tradition and identity.
