MARRIAGE TRADITION
OF FLORES PEOPLE
The island of Flores with some smaller islands
are under administration of Nusa Tenggara Timur province.
The main islands around Flores are Komodo, Rinca, Ende, Solor,
Alor, Adonare, and Lombem Based on their dialect their people
can be grouped as the people of Manggarai, Sikka, and Larantuka.
The people of Manggarai showing physical characteristic of
Mongoloid-Malay, while further east the character of Melanosoid
appears stronger. Only the people of Larantuka showing mixed
characteristics. Below notes on marriage tradition is largely
on the information taken from Manggarai society. Majority
of the people on the island of Flores already following Christianity
and only small number Islam. Larantuka is known as the center
of the Catholic church in East Indonesia.
Among youths and girls in the rural society of Manggarai have
normally happened a relation, and if the relation then decided
to increase the stage into marriage, the parent and family
of the man will come to the family/parent of the woman to
convey the request. With this tradition of man parent apply
request of marriage to the parent of the woman a high marriage
dowry will be targeted. The parent and the family of the woman
normally ask a number of cows and horses. As a return the
family of the woman also give the family/parent of the man
also a gift with high value. So, it forms a relation between
the family of the man and family of the woman as a formal
relation. When the requirements have been fulfilled wedding
ceremony can be organized involving the whole families, and
legal marriage will be done in the church.
Most practical marriage is between a son to the daughter of
mother's brother. This is considered the most ideal marriage,
beside the real marriage dowry will not be needed, yet traditionally,
here marriage dowry is only symbolic. This type of marriage
happened more both within the member of nobility but also
for common people. Most of this marriage type has been deceided
by parents or parents that ply the biggest role until the
wedding ceremony is concluded for the new wed couple.
As other ethnics of Indonesia running from home for the couple
to avoid costly complicated procedure, or no agreement from
parents also introduced within the society of the Manggarai.
Married by running from home is considered as a way to avoid
the feeling of humiliation due to inability to pay high marriage
dowry has been so common, yet a true running from the tradition
due to failure in fulfilling parent's will are also exist. When a marriage
is decided like this the marriage request by man parents will
be conveyed after the couple have run from home some times and
is believed the anger of the woman parents and families have
been calmed down. During the conveyance of the family pardon
and marriage request normally the parents and family of the
woman insist on high dowry, yet in practical life it is not
fulfilled by man parents until a real wedding ceremony or
event after the couple live as family.
