MARRIAGE TRADITION
OF MINAHASA PEOPLE NORTH SULAWESI
The people of Minahasa is the inhabitants
of north Sulawesi with the capital city of Manado. Before
2000 the area was including the current province of Gorontalo.
See from their dialect he people can be grouped as the Minahasa
of Tonsea living on north east, the Tobuku living on north
west of Tondano lake, the Tatemboan living on south west and
south areas of Tondano lake, the Tatemboan living on the east
of lake Tondano, the Tonsawang on Tonsini at the southern
area of Minahasa. Others are the Rantahan, the Panosakan and
the Bantik who live at some places in the area of Minahasa.
In the past they had almost the same tradition of marriage
for their children before the coming of Christianity. Although
the pattern of their living was following a big family house
in which some family members were staying together. Parents
choose partners for their children to marry. This tradition
has been disappeared and a man or a woman are free to choose
their partner of life The tradition to marry partner from
outside of their family is obligatory, although the children
are free to express their choice at the front of his/her parents,
it doesn't mean that the parents are totally absence. An advise
indeed also given to their children in selecting their life
partner. Once the couple is agreed and a marriage date has
been fixed, a special wedding ceremony will be organized.
Legal wedding will be conducted by the Church including the
announcement to the public. Legal wedding will be followed
by wedding celebration such as wedding reception which is
influenced by the tradition of the people of Minahasa as part
of Indonesian ethnic showing almost the same color. Also a
slight influence from the Western culture can be seen during
the wedding ceremony including reception of the families and
relatives. It is easy to understand because Mihanasa land
has been colonized by the Dutch and the Christianity has been
accepted by the local people as their main religion. According
to the record that almost 90% of the residents of Minahasa
land followed Christianity. This notably in the big city such
as Manado as the center of Minahasa culture and business.
After marriage ceremony both legal and traditional wedding,
the couple is living together. In Minahasa society is to live
independently as a new couple. It is often that the new couple
will temporary living with the family of husband or wife while
preparing fort for the independence life such as preparing
land for farming, kitchen tools, cattle breeding, building
house and others. For the preparation of this independence
life the couple is often get assistant from their parents
both from wife or husband.
